1. A salmonoid fish mostly found in fresh waters and highly esteemed as a game and food fish. The brown trout or river trout (Salmo trutta), attaining a length of 30 inches, is common in Europe; the cut–throat trout (S. clarkii), and the rainbow trout or steelhead (S. gairdnerii) are species of western North America. The speckled trout or brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is common in eastern North America.
