1. A body of men self-organized for the maintenance of order and the administration of summary justice in communities where regular authority is lacking or inefficient, especially in lawless sections of the western United States.
2. Formerly, in the southern United States, a group of white citizens organized to terrify and control Negroes and abolitionists.
