Definition of: wintergreen

(win′tər·grēn) noun
1. A small evergreen plant (Gaultheria procumbens) of eastern North America, bearing a cluster of aromatic oval leaves and white, bell-shaped flowers surrounded by red berries (often called teaberries or checkerberries).
2. Oil of wintergreen: a colorless, volatile oil extracted from the leaves of the true wintergreen, used as a flavor and in medicine: often called Gaultheria oil.
3. Any of various English low evergreen herbs (genus Pyrola). In the United States they are sometimes called shinleaf or English or false wintergreen. [On analogy with Du. wintergroen; so called because it is an evergreen]
