One of a series of major geographic areas characterized by the dominance of certain animal groups. The principal realms in the classification of A. R. Wallace are: the Palearctic, Nearctic, Neotropical, Ethiopian, Oriental, and Australian. The first two are often considered together as the Holarctic realm.
