It usually means dancing to music, finding your rhythm, etc. The idea comes from the grooves on vinyl records, and finding your rhythm with the “grooves” of the music.

LikeDislikeMost of these slangs are sexual in natural, this one is too. “Groove” is another name for the “groove” area between a womans legs, IOW, her vagina. Yo get your “groove on” means to get turned on. However the slang has evolved quite a bit and even guys will use this slang, but the original meaning remains.
The same is true for the phrase “that’s tight”. Why is “tight” used? Because a tight vagina feels better than a loose vagina. One of my friends that happens to be a Jesus freak used to say “Jesus is tight” and I would laugh every time. I eventually explained to him what “tight” means and he’s never said “Jesus is tight” again.

It was when Motown records started producing. Doubke ententres were everywhere. Then the word morphed to be about hiw good a band played or how wellyou r another danced. Been there done that. Soul is in the Soul or you just don’t have it.
