What does < and/or > mean in Math?
I should probably already know/remember this, but, what does mean in Math? I know it can mean less than/greater than. I just don’t know which on is which! I know you can say 5x – 9 > 12, but I’m not sure if the answer is greater than 12, or less than /.\ help?
It means “greater than” … you could reverse the math equation to 12 < 5x-9 and it would be read as "less than". An easy way to remember is to think of the symbol () as an alligator’s mouth – the alligator always wants to eat the bigger thing!

LikeDislikeLook at it this way: the point of are pointing to the smaller number. The open part of > and < are pointing to the bigger number. You could remember it by: they are mouths and the mouth wants to eat the bigger number in maths.
so means greater than, according to your post. Is that correct? In other words, <less than 500 (greater than 500 (>500). Yes??

LikeDislikeIn def > greater than 7 twelve is greater than seven
8 > 6 Eight is greater than six
You could write it the other way, and it would still mean the same thing
7 < 12 Seven is less than 12
6 < 8 six is less than eight.
