Going is a term that is used to describe something that is very popular on the internet. Videos on youtube can go viral (like the double rainbow guy), pictures can go viral (like those crazy lolcats), even stories can go viral (like the Lindsay Lohan arrest or what Snookie is wearing)….
Agree. The word “viral” also comes from the medical term Virus. Virus illnesses are typically spread from one person to others very rapidly – denoting the speed and popularity at with news/events/media are transmitted from one person to others via the Internet.
It means sort of like something that a lot of people see like if a youtube video gets a million hits it has gone viral. So, it means it’s popular and a lot of people saw it!!!
“Going viral,” comes from Richard Dawkins’s “The Selfish Gene,” in which he outlines the meme as it is understood today. In his book he says that memes are cultural constructs that act like viruses, moving from one person to the next, replicating itself in a means to expand the culture from which is was created. So, if something goes viral, it has reached meme statues, and is now acting like a cultural virus.
