What does # mean?
We have had it on old telephones for many years, and now people use it all the time, and we don’t even really know if we are highlighting a word, or making it a example etc. I want to know why we also write a sentence after the # with all thewordtogether!!!!!
# means hashtag.

LikeDislikeWhat does the modern use of “hashtag” mean? In my day (I am 80) it was used to refer to something else, or anew paragraph!

LikeDislike# means two things
1. # can mean a number (e.g the # of children)
2. # is a modern way of soting your photo in a gatergory (e.g. you post a photo of you on the beach online, underneath you put ” Chillin’ on the beech! #beach #relax #blessed”)

LikeDislikeWHY do people use the “#” symbol when they text someone?

LikeDislikeOn a telephone, it is the “pound sign”. (There must have been some point in time when it meant a pound in weight.) So when an automated system says, for example, “Enter your prescription number, then press the pound key”; the key with # is the one meant by this.
It can also mean “number” as in #2 pencil (number 2 pencil), in which case it refers to the hardness (which probably refers back to when, so the internet says, the pound was a measure of mass–nothing I used in chemistry).
On social media, # is used as a hashtag, which helps users find others talking about the same topic. (It becomes a clickable link, which finds other instances of the same hashtag.) Often just one keyword, acronym, short phrase, or abbreviation, for brevity (Twitter, after all, limits posts to 140 characters), like #Boston, or #bioethx. It be an abbreviation or acronym that may seem cryptic, like #pwme (people with myalgic encephalomyelitis) or hcldr (healthcare leadership). It may have more than one meaning, like #mhealth can mean mental health or mobile health. Several words might be a slogan, like #GoRedforWomen, Or several words could indicate just being whimsical, whenthewordsjammedtogether are not a common expression.

LikeDislikeThe refernce of it meaning number comes from mathematics, not from mass…
and, please use english for what the symbol is. hash… pound sign is £!!!!!!
We don’t call a ‘#’ symbol a Dollar sign in the UK!!

LikeDislike# does not mean hashtag!!! it is a Hash symbol, a hastag is a hash followed by a word or link to tag the link into a subsequent grouping online.
The same symbol is also used (originally) in mathematics/telephonics to refer to the word ‘number’ when used before a digit. eg. #1 = No.1 = Number 1
However, the symbol at the top of the screen does not have just one set of parrallel lines horizontally; both it’s verticals and horizontals are parrallel… this means it is NOT a Hash symbol, but nor is it a Sharp symbol used in musical notation, as that uses one set of vertical parrallel lines with the horizontal slanted upwards to the right. (cannot find the alt shortcut to put the symbol in here to show the diffence, however, it is readily available by looking at any sheet music and comparing it to either a telephone keypad, a keyboard, or a mathematics symbology sheet)
I honestly cannot say what the symbol you are asking about truly is, as it is technically neither a Hash symbol, nor is it a Sharp.

LikeDislikeNone of the above tells me what the # means. It’s all strange how this thin has crept into multiple usages and we have accepted all of the usages without challenge. I’m old school and the only usage that is clear to me relates to numerals. I am a reader and I find the darned thing Very distracting when it pops up in the middle of a sentence.

LikeDislikeIts official typographic name is the octothorpe. It has no pure meaning as it is a symbol. Its meaning is derived from its use in context. It can be used to describe number, weight and classification. The etymology is unknown.
