A spurious type of early man (E. dawsoni) based on incompatible skull fragments found by Charles Dawson and others in Pleistocene gravel beds near Piltdown, England, between 1909 and 1915; exposed in 1953 as a fossil artifact combining a modern skull with the jaw of an orangutan.
