Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, Vergil's Aeneid are famous classical epics; the Hindu Mahabharata and Ramayana, and the Babylonian Creation Epic are among the world's greatest, as are also the medieval French Chanson de Roland and the 12th century Spanish Poema del Cid. The conscious art epic is typified by Milton's Paradise Lost.
