Definition of: frill

(fril) noun
1. An ornamental band of textile fabric, especially of lace or fine lawn, gathered in folds on one edge, the other edge being left loose; a flounce; ruffle.
2. plural Affected airs and manners; fripperies, as of dress.
3. Zool. A ruff or frill–like part, appendage, or fold, as of elongated feathers on the neck of some birds, of long hairs on the neck of some dogs, and of membrane on the frilled lizard.
4. Bot. A thin membrane surrounding the stem of certain fungi near the pileus or hood, as in Agaricus: also called armilla.
5. Phot. A loosening and bulging of a plate or film around the edges, caused by uneven action of the emulsion; frilling.
