1. A title of Mohammed and his four immediate successors: so called because they conducted the devotions of the faithful.
2. A title of a Moslem religious leader or chief.
3. The title of the leaders of the Shiahs, or heterodox Persian sect of Moslems; Ali and his ten successors: ascribed also to the Mahdi. Compare MAHDI. Also I·maum (i·mäm′, i·môm′).
