Definition of: Mercator's projection
A system of making maps in which the meridians are represented by parallel straight lines, and the parallels of latitude by lines perpendicular to the meridians, and at increasing intervals, so as to preserve the actual ratio between the increments of longitude and latitude at every point. It is accurate at the equator, but areas become increasingly distorted toward the poles.
