Definition of: mosquito

(məs·kē′to) noun plural ·toes or ·tos
1. A two–winged, dipterous insect (family Culicidae), having (in the female) a long proboscis capable of puncturing the skin for extracting blood. The infections of malaria and yellow fever are spread by the bite of certain species. For illustration see INSECTS (injurious).
2. Any of various other gnats or flies inflicting a similar puncture. Also spelled musquito. [<Sp., dim. of mosca fly <L musca]
