(put′ē) noun
1. Whiting mixed with linseed oil to the consistency of dough: used for filling holes or cracks in wood surfaces, securing panes of glass in the sash, making relief ornaments, etc.
2. Fine lime mortar for filling cracks, finishing, etc.
—iron putty Ferric oxide mixed with boiled linseed oil: used in making pipe–joint connections.
—red–lead putty Red and white lead mixed with boiled linseed oil, used mainly for cementing pipe joints.
