1. Any of an order (Caudata) of tailed, lizardlike amphibians having a smooth, moist, scaleless skin and usually two pairs of limbs, as the American tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum): once popularly believed able to live in fire.
2. One of the genii fabled to live in fire; an elemental fire spirit in Paracelsus' theory of elementals; hence, a creature fabled to live in fire.
3. Any person or thing that can stand great heat.
4. A large poker or other implement used around or in fire, or when red–hot.
