(sä′təm, sā′-) noun
The eastern division of the Indo–European family of languages, including the Indo–Iranian, Armenian, Albanian, and Balto–Slavic subfamilies, in which proto–Indo–European palatal (k) is typically sibilated, as in the Avestan word satem “hundred.” Compare CENTUM.
