(sī′rən) noun
1. One of two, or, in later Greek legend, three nymphs, living on an island, who lured sailors to destruction by their sweet singing. They are represented as birds with women's heads, later as women with birds' feet and wings. Odysseus escaped them by sealing his companions' ears with wax and having himself bound to his ship's mast.

3. An eel–like amphibian (genus Siren) having well developed gills and lacking hind legs; a mud eel.
4. An apparatus having a device with a perforated rotating disk or disks through which sharp puffs of steam or compressed air are permitted to escape in such rapid succession as to produce a continued musical note or a loud whistle: used in acoustical investigations and as a warning signal.
—adjective Of or pertaining to a siren; hence, alluring; bewitching; dangerously fascinating. Also spelled syren. [<L <Gk. seirēn]
