(gil) noun
1. An organ for breathing the air dissolved in water, consisting, in aquatic vertebrates, as fishes and amphibians, of leaflike or threadlike vascular processes of mucous membrane on either side of the neck. Fishes take in water for the gills through the mouth and force it out mostly through the gill slits.
2. A gill-like part, as the wattle of a fowl.
3. Bot. One of the thin radial plates on the under side of the cap of a mushroom.
