(sol′ə·dəs) noun plural ·di (-dī)
1. A gold coin of the Byzantine Empire: first issued under Constantine, it remained the standard unit of currency during the Middle Ages, when it was called a bezant.
2. A medieval coin, equal to 12 denarii: often called shilling.
3. The sign (/) used to divide shillings from pence: 10/6 (10s. 6d.), being originally the long ƒ written for shilling: sometimes also used instead of a horizontal line to express fractions: 3/4. See VIRGULE. [<LL]
