Definition of: suspension

1. The act of suspending or hanging.
2. The state of deferment.
3. Physics A uniform dispersion of the fine particles of a solid in a liquid which does not dissolve them. Compare BROWNIAN MOVEMENT, COLLOID.
4. Cessation of payments in business; a going into liquidation: the suspension of a bank.
5. Any device used for the purpose of suspension, as in a compass.
6. Mech. A system of flexible or absorbent members, as springs in a vehicle, intended to insulate the chassis and body against road shocks transmitted by the wheels.
7. Music The prolongation of any note of a chord into the succeeding chord, causing at first dissonance which disappears by resolution; the note so prolonged.
8. The act of debarring from an office or its privileges.
