The system of philosophy or the theology developed by Emanuel Swedenborg, or from his writings, which teaches that Jesus Christ is the only God, and emphasizes a symbolic interpretation of the Bible. The Swedenborgian church, first organized in London in 1783, is called the New Church, or the New Jerusalem Church. Also Swe′den·borg′ism (-bôrg′iz·əm).
