Any of several gull–like birds (subfamily Sterninae), having the bill pointed and the mandibles co–terminal, smaller than most gulls, with wings more pointed, and the tail usually deeply forked; especially, the common tern (Sterna hirundo) of the Atlantic coasts, white with a black cap, and the least or minute tern (S. antillarum). ♦ Homophones: terne, turn.
