Definition of: tournament

(tûr′nə·mənt, tr′-) noun
1. In medieval times, a pageant in which two opposing parties of men in armor contended on horseback, with blunted weapons, in mock combat.
2. The jousts, sports, or contests in which such combatants engaged.
3. A comparatively recent sport of skilled horsemen, who tilt at rings suspended in the air, seeking to bear them off on their lances.
4. Any contest of skill involving a number of competitors and a series of games: a chess tournament.
