Definition of: Trust Territory

An area, usually a former colonial possession, governed by a member state of the United Nations as an Administering Authority reporting to the United Nations Trusteeship Council functioning under the authority of the General Assembly with the exception that the trusteeships of the areas designated as strategic are supervised by the Security Council after first having approved the trust agreements. Trust Territories include former League of Nations mandates. Also trust territory, UN Trust Territory. The independence of the Cameroons, Somaliland, Tanganyika, and Togoland in 1960–61 and of Western Samoa in 1962 reduced the Trust Territories to:
