1. In a high degree; in large measure; extremely: very generous.
2. Exactly: the very same thought. ♦ Some grammarians feel that very may properly be used before a participle only when the latter precedes the noun it modifies, as in a very agitated speech; when the participle is used after some form of the verb to be, another adverb is interposed, as in He was very much (or greatly) agitated. However, the construction without the adverb is now widely accepted with participles of emotion or feeling, and is often found, as well, with some participles describing physical condition, as in They were very disturbed; His face is very changed in aspect.
