Definition of: vocal cords

Two membranous bands extending from the thyroid cartilage of the larynx. The edges of these bands, when drawn tense, are caused to vibrate by the passage of air from the lungs, thereby producing voice; the degree of tension of the cords controls the pitch of the voice.
