The high pitch, known as concert pitch, has about 450 vibrations for middle A. In 1859 acommission of French musicians and scientists determined the pitch of A′ as 435 (true C″ 522, equal temperament C″ 517) which is known as French, international, or low pitch. The present standard or philharmonic pitch has 440 vibrations for middle A.
8. In games, the act of pitching; a throw; specifically, in baseball, the delivery of the ball by the pitcher; also, the place of pitching or the distance pitched.
9. Geol. The inclination or dip of a rock stratum or vein of ore.
10. The act of dipping or plunging downward; the pitching of a ship: correlative of scend.
