2. Any of a family (Sylviidae) of plain–colored, mostly Old World birds allied to the kinglets and noted for their song, as the whitethroat.
3. Any of a large and varied family (Compsothlypidae) of small American insectivorous birds, usually brilliantly colored and with little powers of song, as the summer or yellow warbler (Dendroica aestiva), the redstart, ovenbird, and water thrush. Also wood warbler.
