Definition of: fixation

(fik·sā′shən) noun
1. The act of fixing, or the state of being fixed; stability.
2. Chem. a A state of non–volatility in a chemical compound, or the entering into such a state. b The making permanent of a dye or color. c The conversion of free nitrogen from the air into useful compounds; any similar process applied to an oil or a gas.
3. Psychoanal. An excessive concentration of the libido on a particular object, as the exaggerated attachment of a child for one of its parents, manifested in periods of adult emotional stress in some types of psychosis or psychoneurosis.
4. A sustained focusing of the eyes upon a definite object.
5. Bacteriol. The prevention of hemolysis by the action of the complement.
