A region of east central Asia south of Asiatic Russian S.F.S.R., east and north of China's Sinkiang-Uigur Autonomous Region, west of most of former Manchuria and the rest of NE China, and north of central China; about 1,000,000 square miles; divided into: (1) the Mongolian People's Republic (formerly Outer Mongolia), an independent country in the northern and western part; 590,966 square miles; capital, Ulan Bator; (2) Inner Mongolia, a region of northern China, including the former provinces of Ningsia, Suiyuan, Chahar, and Jehol and western (former) Manchuria, most of which region now comprises: (3) the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, an autonomous division of central northern China, including parts of western (former) Manchuria, and former Chahar and Jehol provinces and all of former Suiyuan province; over 400,000 square miles; capital, Huhehot (formerly Kweisui).
