The longest river in Africa, rising in Lake Victoria and flowing 3,485 miles north to the Mediterranean; between Lake Victoria and Lake Albert it is known as the Victoria Nile; between Lake Albert and the Sudan as the Albert Nile (Arabic Bahr–el–Jebel); between Lake No and Khartoum as the White Nile (Arabic Bahr–el–Abiad); at Khartoum it receives the Blue Nile (Arabic Bahr–el–Azraq), a tributary flowing 850 miles from Ethiopia, and is known as the Nile (Arabic Bahr–en–Nil) for the rest of its course.
