1. That which remains; something left after a subtraction, expenditure, or passing over of a part; a residue; remnant.
2. Math. a That which is left after the subtraction of one quantity from another. b In division, the excess of the dividend over the product of the divisor by the integral part of the quotient.
3. Law An estate in expectancy, but not in actual possession and enjoyment; that remnant or residue of interest which, on the creation of a particular prior estate, is by the same instrument limited to another to be enjoyed on the termination of that estate.
4. In philately, an obsolete issue of stamps, demonetized by the government and sold at a large discount, generally to dealers.
5. A copy or part of an edition of a book remaining with a publisher after sales have ceased.
