1. A tenacious, elastic material obtained by coagulating the milky latex of certain tropical plants, especially the tree Hevea brasiliensis. When purified, the crude rubber or caoutchouc is a white polymerized isoprene; it is insoluble in water or alcohol, and for commercial use is mixed with various vulcanizing agents, fillers, and pigments, then heated and molded into the desired form.
