Definition of: transit

(tran′sit, -zit) noun
1. The act of passing over or through; passage.
2. The act of carrying across or through; conveyance.
3. A specific passage or route; also, a traveler through a country.
4. Astron. a The passage of one heavenly body over the disk of another. b The moment of passage of a celestial body across the meridian: when in that half of the meridian containing the zenith it is superior or upper transit; when in that half containing the nadir it is inferior or lower transit.
