1. The fermented juice of the grape, containing various percentages of alcohol by volume, commonly used as a beverage and in cooking. Wines are often classified as dry or sweet, red or white, still or sparkling. Fortified wines have brandy added, and contain alcohol of from 16 to 23 percent.
2. By extension, the fermented juice of some fruit other than the grape: elderberry wine; sometimes, a fermented vegetable juice: dandelion wine.
3. The effects of drinking too much wine; intoxication.
4. A convivial gathering at which wine and other liquors are served; a wine party.
5. A medicinal preparation in which wine is used as the menstruum: wine of opium.
6. Any color resembling the color of wine, especially of a red wine, usually a dark, purplish red.
