A state of SE Europe on the Adriatic; the largest country of the Balkans; 98,538 square miles; capital, Belgrade; 1918–1929, the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, formed by the union of Serbia and Montenegro with former Austro-Hungarian provinces; 1929–41 the Kingdom of Yugoslavia; 1941–45 occupied by Axis Powers; the present federal republic comprises six “people's republics”: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia: also Jugoslavia.
