—life′less·ly adverb
—life′less·ness noun Synonyms: dead, deceased, defunct, dull, extinct, inanimate, inert, spiritless, torpid. Dead primarily applies to a once–living organism from which life has departed: this original meaning controls the derived senses; inanimate primarily applies to that which never had life. Lifeless may be used in either connection, and may be also used of that which exhibits none of the signs of life. The derived meanings of these words are many. A picture, a statue, a poem, an actor's rendering of his part may be spoken of as lifeless; we speak of a dead book, dead capital, a dead wall, and even of a dead (that is, a dull or non-resonant) sound. Deceased is in formal and approved use as a euphemism for dead; defunct is used to mean finished or extinct as well as dead. Extinct implies cessation of vitality or force: an extinct volcano. See DEAD, FLAT. Antonyms: active, alive, animated, live, living, stirring, vigorous.
